Better Late Than Never…My Review of Frank (Spoilers)
Been meaning to write a little review/thoughts on Frank (saw it weeks ago) and doing it now :)
I’ve been meaning to see this since Scoot McNairy is in it, but then again seeing the trailer and clips…really was interested in seeing Michael Fassbender do comedy (to be honest, I haven’t really seen much of him in anything else…although I did break my rule of not seeing X-Men movies and finally watched First Class). And it just seemed like a funny movie overall.
-Really great performances especially by Michael, Domnhall Gleeson (Jon),Scoot McNairy (Don) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Clara….who BTW seemed like a bitch but then later on, you sorta see why she acts the way she is).
-Really liked the dynamics between Jon and Don & Jon and Frank.I liked that Jon was the audience surrogate and we too were curious about Frank sporting the gigantic head.
-The recording session of their album (which I think took like a year and a half) was too funny especially when they created their “sounds” from a cheese grater, brushing a toothbrush and *my fave* a door opening and closing. The latter…Frank states “we should make an album of this one sound” which is just too funny.
-When they finally recorded the album (I think thats what they did lol) and celebrated….it somewhat became a different film. Well after they celebrated (the camera focuses on Don chugging a Corona)…it cut to Jon waking up and finding that Frank had hanged himself from a tree BUT it was really Don (sporting Frank’s “second head”) who killed himself :( (BTW earlier Don tells Jon that he met Frank when both were in a mental hospital…Don has issues like becoming suicidal *he wanted to drown himself earlier I think..Frank tried stopping him but Clara did* and he likes to have sex with mannequins). So sad at that part and I think that carried with me after the film.
-I definitely think the movie changed after that part….surely there were some funny parts but it wasn’t the same as in the first half. It seems really dark compared to the beginning etc.
-Then it got a bit depressing when Frank became unmasked and then you see Don finally locate him (I always get amused when he mistakens the tree surgeon as Frank) and he’s just not stabled. He doesn’t talk as much and not as confident/normal as he seemed with the head on. I kept asking myself… “Oh my is that really Michael Fassbender?!?” I couldn’t believe it. Since Frank is mentally ill. I think he suffers from body dysmorphic disorder
-When he was reunited with Soronprfbs (thanks Stephen Colbert for saying that on your show…wasn’t sure how to pronounce it) and sings “I Love You All” I liked that that somewhat gave Frank the confidence he had in the beginning of the movie.
Those are my thoughts….I was expecting it to be like this eccentric comedy judging from the trailers and clips I saw but it shifted away from that in the last part. There were some funny parts but there were also some dark ones. I was just really surprised by that.
